The Best Paintings to Try for Your First Class
At Pinot’s Palette, every class is designed to be approachable, but if you are brand new to painting, certain styles can help you feel more relaxed, more confident, and more willing to enjoy the process.
The good news is that some paintings are naturally more beginner-friendly than others.
All of our artwork is designed with newbies in mind, so you never need experience to have a great time. Our talented artist instructors guide you step by step and make each painting feel approachable, even if you have never picked up a brush before. That said, if you are feeling a little nervous about your first class, these upcoming paintings are some of our favorite beginner-friendly choices.
So what makes a painting great for a first-timer? Usually, it is a painting that does not depend on perfect shapes, straight lines, or exact details. The best beginner paintings are often the ones where a little imperfection actually makes the artwork look better.
*** LANDSCAPES Are a Great Place to Start
Landscapes are one of the best choices for first-time painters because nature is not supposed to look perfectly even or symmetrical.
Trees lean. Clouds change shape. Mountains have uneven edges. Water reflects light in soft, unpredictable ways. A brushstroke that lands in a slightly different spot can easily become a shadow, a branch, a wave, a patch of grass, or a glowing part of the sky.
That is what makes landscapes so forgiving. You do not need every line to be exact. In fact, if a landscape looks too perfect, it can start to feel less realistic. Nature has movement, texture, and variation, so small “mistakes” often make the finished painting feel more natural and alive.
-->>> and speaking of TREES... We have a ton of tree paintings on the calendar... some are included in a wide-open landscape, while others are the main event; Soft or intense colors made up the background, but there's no denying that the star of the piece is the tree!
We are all about some trees as a beginner-friendly option! From crooked lines, to fat brushstrokes, blobbing colors here and there... and letting their misshapen-ness become the basis of the design, there's no messing up a tree!
*** FLORAL Paintings Are Very Beginner-Friendly
Flowers are another wonderful option for first-timers because they allow for a lot of freedom. A petal does not have to be perfectly shaped to look beautiful. Leaves can be different sizes. Stems can curve. Colors can blend softly together.
With floral paintings, even a smudge or uneven brushstroke can become part of the design. A spot of paint can look like texture, depth, shadow, or an extra petal. This makes flower paintings feel less stressful and more playful, especially for someone who is still getting comfortable with the brush.
Floral artwork also gives beginners a chance to experiment with color, layering, and loose brushwork without feeling like every detail has to be exact.
