Monet at 100: Why Impressionism Still Feels Fresh a Century Later
From peaceful water lilies to sun-drenched gardens, Monet's work has a timeless quality that feels just as inviting today as it did more than a century ago.
---> But what makes his art so enduring?
*** The Artist Who Helped Change Everything ***
Claude Monet (1840–1926) was one of the founders of Impressionism, an art movement that challenged traditional ideas about painting. Rather than focusing on perfectly detailed, realistic scenes, Monet wanted to capture how a moment felt—the shifting sunlight, reflections on water, and colors of the natural world.
In fact, the name "Impressionism" came from Monet's 1872 painting Impression, Sunrise. When the painting was exhibited in 1874, a critic used its title to mock the loose, unfinished-looking style. Little did he know that the name would stick and eventually represent one of the most beloved movements in art history!

*** Why Impressionism Still Feels So Modern ***
Part of Monet's lasting appeal is how effortlessly his paintings balance simplicity and beauty. His brushstrokes are loose, his colors are vibrant, and his subjects are wonderfully familiar: flowers, gardens, rivers, and beautiful skies.
Instead of painting exactly what he saw, Monet painted his impression of it. He often revisited the same subjects at different times of day, exploring how changes in light could completely transform a scene.
His famous Water Lilies series is a perfect example. Inspired by the pond in his garden in Giverny, France, these paintings blend color, light, and reflection so beautifully that some almost feel abstract. It's easy to see why his work continues to influence artists today.
And perhaps that's the secret to Impressionism's staying power... It reminds us that art doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. Sometimes, capturing a feeling is even more powerful than capturing every detail.
