She will walk you through one of our 2-3 hour paintings, step-by-setp, breaking it down for you the whole way, and always available to assist should you need help... First-time painters, have no fear.. Marcela is here!
Marcela was born in California in 1976, She lost her father in 1978 and her Columbian mother moved the family back and forth, multiple times until they settled in Chapel Hill, NC in 1991. Marcela comes from a multi-cultural, multi-disciplined background. She graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 1998 with a BFA in Graphic Design, then obtained her MFA in Illustration in 2000.
Marcela is no stranger to travel and adventure, living in several, eclectic places all over the world, throughout her life. She lived in Barcelona, Spain for a while, where she debuted as Artist, Designer, and Curator. ‘La cuchara art I disseny’ and ‘sladesign’ were the two gallery-studio spaces that she co-owned with her husband in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarters.
Most recently, Marcela was living in Quito, Ecuador, where she owned the ‘xerrajeros’ galleria studio shop, and taught Art snd Design at ‘Universidad San Francisco de Quito’ (USFQ), as well as ‘Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador’ (PUCE). During her time at PUCE, she was a part-time professor, her classes varying each semester between studio classes and electives in various Art and Design Departments. Her ‘xerrajeros’ gallery was a multi-purpose space, housing her own studio space, ‘studio2 Architecture’ (her husband’s private architectural practice), and a storefront gallery, dedicated to promoting the work of up-and-coming, as well as renowned artists. Some of these artists included Motomichi Nakamura, Marcelo Aguirre, Washington Mosquera, Carols Echeverria Kossak, and Miguel Bentancourt. In addition to them was Luigi Stornaiolo, to whom, Marcela, was the understudy and then became his exclusive representative. Together, Marcela and Luigi created more than 40 works of art. These included the design and production of a 12x8 meter mural, located in Quito’s Historical Downtown and the statue ‘Matilde Hidalgo’ for the country’s University-level achievement awards.
Last year, Marcela returned to Carrboro, NC after being abroad for 16 years. She has had several fashion/art shows both, locally and internationally since 2000 and was recently appointed to the Orange County Art commission. Some of her local venues include ‘Carrboro Greenspace’, ‘Cat’s Cradle’, 'Southern Rai’, ‘Raleigh Beer Garden’, ‘The Cotton Room' at 'Golden Belt’, and ‘The Carrack Modern Art’.
If you’re interested in seeing some of Marcela’s beautiful work, her next art show will be held in March 2018 at 'The Golden Belt' in Durham (room #100). It will include paintings, drawings, and a small 'sladedesign' collection, which is her line of fashion and accessories, she fabricated herself. You contact 'Golden Belt’ through the link below or Marcela on her website, at the bottom of the page for more information if you’re interested. The show will run throughout all of March!

Marcela believes that drawing and painting can be a great form of personal expression and that many times, the subject or theme of a painting, arises, unconsciously through our experiences. Her own painting style can be can be categorized as ‘Expressionist/Instrumentalist’, as she uses distortion as a statement about human nature. The graphic and illustrative quality of her artwork, reflects her educational background at SCAD.
