The Surprising Origins of Our Favorite Halloween Traditions
There's carving pumpkins, dressing up in costumes, decorating with spooky creatures, and filling our bags (and bellies!) with candy.
BUT have you ever wondered where these traditions actually came from?
Some date back thousands of years, while others are surprisingly new!
Let's uncover the history behind some of our favorite Halloween customs.
You might be surprised by what you learn!
~~~ Jack-o'-Lanterns: From Turnips to Pumpkins ~~~
The first jack-o'-lanterns weren't pumpkins at all.
In Ireland and Scotland, people traditionally carved frightening faces into turnips and other root vegetables. The custom became associated with an Irish folktale about Stingy Jack, a trickster condemned to wander the earth with only a glowing ember to light his way.
When Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, they discovered pumpkins were larger, easier to carve, and much more plentiful. And just like that, the glowing pumpkin became a Halloween icon!
~~~ Halloween Costumes: Dressing to Fool the Spirits ~~~
Long before superheroes and princesses took over Halloween, costumes had a much spookier purpose.
During the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around October 31, people believed spirits could cross into the world of the living. Disguises and masks became associated with these supernatural traditions, while later European customs encouraged people to dress up and go door-to-door performing for treats.
Today, we're more interested in winning costume contests than confusing wandering ghosts, but the tradition lives on!
~~~ Trick-or-Treating: A Sweet Deal ~~~
The practice of going door-to-door has roots in medieval European customs like "souling," when people exchanged prayers for small cakes, and "guising," when costumed visitors performed songs or jokes in exchange for food.
Modern trick-or-treating became especially popular in the United States during the 1930s through the 1950s, partly as communities encouraged more organized Halloween fun instead of mischief.
And candy? It didn't become the Halloween treat of choice until the mid-20th century, when individually wrapped sweets became an easy and popular handout.
~~~ Black Cats: From Bad Luck to Halloween Mascots ~~~
Black cats have been associated with magic and superstition for centuries.
During the Middle Ages and early modern period in Europe, some people believed witches could transform into cats or keep them as supernatural companions. These beliefs helped give black cats their mysterious reputation.
Luckily, today we know black cats are just as lovable as any other feline, even if they still make excellent Halloween decorations!
~~~ Witches and Broomsticks: A Magical Mystery ~~~
Witches have been part of folklore for centuries, but where did their famous broomsticks come from?
In European folklore, witches were sometimes believed to fly through the night on broomsticks, a symbol that became especially popular in illustrations and stories from the early modern period onward.
Add a pointy hat, a bubbling cauldron, and a mischievous cackle, and you've got one of Halloween's most recognizable characters!
~~~ Bobbing for Apples: Halloween's Forgotten Party Game ~~~
Before Halloween parties were filled with candy bowls and costume contests, bobbing for apples was a favorite seasonal activity.
Apples have long been associated with autumn harvest celebrations, and apple games became part of Halloween festivities in Britain and Ireland. Some versions even involved predicting future romances!
It's a wonderfully silly tradition, although trying to catch a floating apple with your teeth is definitely harder than it looks!
