Margaret Murphy-Webb is a Chicago based jazz musician, educator, producer and arts agitator. A graduate of Chicago State University with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance, this award-winning international performer has been showcasing her talent in the Chicago area for over thirty years. Margaret began singing in church at age 5, as did most of her peers and started piano lessons at age 9 with the neighborhood piano teacher. As a teenager working in her father’s record shop, a recording by the legendary Carmen McRae piqued her interest in jazz. At age 20, Margaret began attending the Tuesday night jam sessions run by Chicago tenor saxophone great Von Freeman and under his tutelage developed her unique vocal style and showmanship. As the vocalist for the Von Freeman Quartet, Margaret performed at The Taste of Chicago, The Jazz Showcase, The Chicago Jazz Festival, Andy's, The Green Mill and many popular Chicago venues.

Working as bandleader, Margaret was nicknamed the “Queen of 75th Street” as she began performing in the many jazz clubs located on the famous strip between Cottage Grove and State Street. As the years went by, she spread her talents throughout the city and beyond: Navy Pier Beer Garden, Chicago Lake Michigan Cruise Ships, the Chicago Jazz and Blues Festivals, music fests
in Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio, countless neighborhood events and citywide jazz venues. Margaret performed with husband, legendary bassist Chuck Webb at the 2018 and 2019 Chicago Jazz Festivals. She has toured Germany and France, performed for both Presidents Obama and Clinton and opened for jazz pianists Joe Sample, Chick Corea and the legendary Tower of Power at The House of Blues. In 2007, Margaret released her debut CD entitled, “In Full Bloom.” RadioIndy certified the CD as Gold for outstanding production and Margaret received the 2007 award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her rendition of “Pearls,” a haunting ballad on the African food crisis, by Sade. In 2021, Margaret with the Simone Stevens of Cerqua Rivera Theater, received The Regina Taylor Mixed Tape award for her vocalese on "Culture Loop", a stirring tribute to the angst of being young, black and female.

Margaret has received awards from Global Girls, Metropolitan Services and The South Shore Drill Team for her work in mentoring and inspiring young vocalists and musicians. In 2018, Margaret was named Chicago’s Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists of America for her work as Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization, The South Side Jazz Coalition. The SSJC produces free live music performances throughout culturally deprived neighborhoods on Chicago’s far south side.

Margaret was a co-chair for the Year of Chicago Music 2020-21 initiative sponsored by DCASE and in January 2020, she was appointed to the City of Chicago Cultural Council. Margaret is a member of the Chicago Peace Fellows, an international group dedicated to providing culture, community service and organizing to under-served communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check out our FAQs to learn more about what to expect from your Pinot's Palette experience or feel free to call the studio to speak to a member of our staff.

  • When should I arrive for class?

30 minutes before scheduled start time. Class MUST start at scheduled time to be fair to all who are attending. Please arrive 30 minutes before class starts to allow time to get settled in, grab a drink from our bar and mingle before the painting starts.

  • How do I sign up for a class?

To reserve a seat for one of our paint parties, click on our home page and scroll through our upcoming events or visit our ‘Event Calendar’ to view our full upcoming calendar of events. Click on the painting of your choice. To reserve a seat, click the ‘Register’ button and follow the on-screen directions to complete the order. Please contact us if you have any trouble completing your order. We will help you trouble shoot the issue or simply take your reservation by phone.

  • Is there an age limit for your regular public classes?

We welcome families and children ages 6 years and above for any of our daytime paint parties. While our evening classes that begin after 5 pm are structured for adults, we do allow guests aged 13 – 17 to participate if they are accompanied by an adult. All guests must be at least 21 years of age to purchase or consume alcohol.

  • What should I wear to paint?

No dress code here...dress casual or dress up! We provide all guests with an apron, but painters have been known to get involved in their work of art. Should any acrylic paint get on your clothes, it can typically be washed out within 60 seconds. If allowed to set longer, the paint may be permanent.

  • I don’t have any artistic talent? Will I be able to complete the painting?

Absolutely! Our paint parties are intended for beginners, but are also fun for more seasoned artists. Our artist will guide you step-by-step through the featured painting. You can follow along as much, or as little, as you’d like. Feel free to choose a different color from our paint cart, add in your own detail or paint another image entirely. We encourage creativity and there are no mistakes! Acrylic paint dries quickly, so making changes or perfecting your painting is easy to do.
