What Kind of Paint Do We Use at Pinot’s Palette?
Acrylics are colorful, versatile, and easy to work with, making them a great choice for artists of all experience levels. Whether you’re picking up a paintbrush for the first time or already love getting creative, here’s a little more about the paint behind your masterpiece.
Why Do We Use Acrylic Paint?
Acrylic paint is water-based, which means it’s easy to use and doesn’t require any special chemicals or solvents for cleanup. It also comes in a beautiful range of vibrant colors and works wonderfully on canvas.
Unlike oil paints, which can take days or even weeks to dry, acrylics dry relatively quickly. This allows us to create a complete painting during a single class, so you can take your artwork home at the end of the night!
How Long Does Acrylic Paint Take to Dry?
One of the best things about acrylic paint is its quick drying time. Thin layers can become touch-dry in as little as 10–20 minutes, depending on how much paint you use and the temperature and humidity in the room.
Thicker areas of paint may take longer, which is why your painting might still have a few damp spots when class ends. Even if the surface feels dry, the paint underneath can still be curing, so it's best to handle your canvas carefully on the way home.
The Magic of Layering Colors
Ever wonder how a painting goes from a few simple shapes to a beautiful finished piece? A lot of that magic happens through layering!
Because acrylic paint dries quickly, we can build up colors and details throughout the class. We might start with a colorful background, add larger shapes and objects, and finish with highlights, shadows, and those little details that bring everything together.
Acrylics are also great for mixing colors. With just a few basic shades, you can create a whole palette of new colors. And if you make a mistake? No worries! Once the paint dries, you can often paint right over it. That's one of the things that makes acrylic painting so forgiving for beginners.
Is Acrylic Paint Easy to Clean Up?
Absolutely! While acrylic paint is still wet, brushes and other painting tools can be cleaned with water and a little soap.
However, once acrylic paint dries, it becomes water-resistant and can be difficult to remove from clothing or fabric. That's why we recommend wearing something you wouldn't mind getting a little paint on. After all, getting creative can sometimes get a little messy!
