Acrylic Painting Technique #7: Woodgrain! You will need: A canvas, a flat paintbrush and a small round paintbrush, plus acrylic paint in black, white, brown and yellow.
Mix the paint for the first layer: 2 dabs white + 1 dab brown + 1 dab yellow. Once evenly mixed, apply this color to the whole canvas in big, sweeping brushstrokes.
Next, add horizontal layers of all four unmixed colors – just a little bit at a time! Don’t rinse between colors – this will help them blend into each other for a more natural look.
However, you can use a wet brush to soften any harsh lines between colors.
For really thin lines, use just the brush tip to paint with. Use thin, evenly-spaced lines in brown to mark off each wood beam. Again using your brush tip, paint oblong wood shapes in brown (not too many!). For the final 3D touch, accentuate the space between each board. And there it is – a rustic woodgrain texture on canvas!
