Four Steps to Design Success!

Ok, so we all have that one big blank wall or awkward space that we want to make more charming, but it’s intimidating! Here are a few different and successful design tips to bring order to your planning:
1. The frame choice: modern or eclectic? The modern look requires that the same frame be used for all pieces. The frame sizes can vary, but the color should not. The eclectic style requires collecting a variety of frame styles. This collection can be (or be painted) the same color. Do you have any of that living room trim paint left? If you choose not to paint your eclectic frame collection all the same color, ensure that they are in the same color palette.
2. The arrangement: Symmetry or whimsy? Symmetry lends itself easily to the modern style, but can be used in the eclectic style as well. Whimsy, is more challenging, because it is a bit rebellious and innovative by nature. If choosing whimsy, you may (gasp!) break rule 3 or use statement hooks/hanging systems like anchored wire racks with clothes pins. To help you visualize, arrange your hanging items on the floor before committing nail holes in your walls. Consider which pieces are the most eye-catching and their placement.
3. The secret is in the margins! As best you can, keep the distance between frames consistent. The space you chose will depend on the size wall you plan to cover, but I often use four inch margins.
4. The hardware part. Be sure to use hardware that was made for your wall. Are you hanging on drywall? Consider wall-anchors. Are you hanging on wood? Get some finishing nails and a detail hammer. Are you renting? Choose Command brand stickies that match the weight of your pieces. I like the Velcro stickes best because they can be completely hidden.
I hope these four steps have made it easy for you to complete your project! Feel free to post photos of your finished wall. We want to see!
