International Women's Day - #BeBoldForChangeGoogle tells me that today is International Women’s Day, a day to recognize the rights of women and to commemorate the struggle that the women’s movement has had to get to this point. At our house, where there is only one male member (unless you count the geldings and “fixed” dog and cat), the rights of women are recognized daily, and so are the ongoing struggles.
As the father of three daughters (one is grown and moved into her own place), I had no choice but to learn long ago to listen to what women say. I truly believe that while men and women are not the same, they deserve equal voice and opportunity, and my life and business are better when we work together as equals. For most of the world, including the United States, women do not have equal opportunity or treatment. Progress has been made. In my parent’s world, there was no question that men were dominant, and even well-educated, capable women like my mother accepted this. In my generation, many have struggled to close the gender gap, but it still exists, and progress has been inconsistent with the gap sometimes growing wider.
This year’s International Women’s Day has a slogan, #BeBoldForChange, challenging all of us to change the world and empower women at all levels. I hope, not just for the sake of my daughters, but for everyone, that we are able to make progress toward true equality.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we won’t be on strike so come out for a fabulous girls’ night out (or women’s night out, if you prefer). Pandora has developed several channels of music by women, and we’ll be playing that this weekend, so join us – #BeBoldForChange with us – and create a masterpiece as you paint and sip with us in our studio.
