Travel Tuesday Presents: Magnificent Sunsets & Sunrises Across AsiaNo matter where you set off to in this wide and wondrous world there will surely be amazing sunrises and sunsets waiting for you. One place, one sunrise, and one sunset will never be quite like another. You could spend a lifetime chasing these magnificent moments across the globe and still be in awe of their radiance for the rest of your life.
Over the last year of travel, we’ve chased some pretty amazing sunrises and sunsets that will forever hold a special place in our heart. Here are a few of our favorites:
Sunrise and sunset aside, Bagan’s sprawling sacred grounds are a site worthy of any traveler’s bucket list. Venturing around the small towns and sandy, dirt roads on little, electric bikes make for an incredible way to take in the temples and scenery around you. Each morning we would watch the sun rise over the horizon, as it cast mango-colored light over temples as far as our eyes could see. We felt like we were being transported back into the past as we wondered what life would have been like centuries ago.
Thorong La Pass, Himalayan Mountains, Nepal
If you were to ask us what is one of the most challenging (and rewarding) things we have done in our lives?
We would have to say our 16-day trek through the Himalayas on the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. The vastness and beauty of these mountains puts into perspective what a tiny space we, as humans, occupy in this world. On the day we pushed up and over Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m (17,769 ft) we began the climb well before sunrise. Watching the world transform before our eyes from pitch black to gray and then yellow and blue reflecting against the white snow was unlike anything we’d ever seen before. Standing higher than we had ever been in our lives, this was an unforgettable sunrise as prayer flags flapped in the distance.
Udawalawe National Park, Sri Lanka
There’s something magical about the jungle before first light. The animals begin to stir, there’s a chill in the air, and slowly the entire sky is illuminated by orange, blue, and white streaks. The green of the trees comes to life, the brown of the dirt road stretches out in front of you, and the movement of giant elephants wake you up. Going on Safari in Sri Lanka was a wonderful way to watch a different type of sunrise… accompanied by elephants!
Port Barton, Philippines
Still a relatively undiscovered tourist location with few amenities. Port Barton is a quaint fishing town that runs on generators for a few hours a day. It is also one of our favorite places in the world. And, the sunsets are to die for. The entire sky illuminates in red, orange, and pink streaks as clouds dance back and forth over the ocean waves, and traditional out-rigger boats dot the horizon. Talk about a magical place to spend an evening.
Hoi An, Vietnam
Many of our favorite sunrises and sunsets take place in nature as we love being outdoors. That said, towns and cities can be exquisite too. Take Hoi An as an example. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has one of the most stunning sunsets we’ve seen in our lives. A canal runs through part of town and provides the perfect reflection pool for the surrounding French-colonial architecture. Stunning buildings, vibrant lanterns, and the brilliant sun reflect on the water in perfect harmony.
Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia
Yet another island paradise with crystal clear blue water and miles and miles of ocean. Perhentian Kecil is a dream to explore. Heading over to Coral Bay will rewards you with an exquisite sunset over the harbor. We enjoyed soaking up the last of the sun’s glorious rays as we lounged on the sand with a Tiger or Carlsberg beer in hand.
Sunsets have this magical way of letting you forget about the worries of the day and completely succumb to being present in the moment. We find it very therapeutic to set aside time each day to enjoy the sun as it sets over the horizon
