Oscars 2019: Who Should, Could, & Will WinIt’s been a rough Oscar season, to say the least. From a disastrous attempt to find a host for the event (which still has yet to be solved) to the back-and-forth on whether to televise all of the awards, not to mention the addition of a new category, which has since been cancelled, Hollywood’s biggest night has become somewhat of a joke. That’s not to say that I don’t plan on watching the event, if nothing else, just to see how it all goes down…
It’s also worth mentioning that it’s been a great year for performances. The movies? Eh. The performances? Top notch. “Roma” and “The Favourite” lead the pack with 10 nominations apiece. Both films are nominated for best picture, alongside “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Star Is Born,” “Vice,” and “Green Book.” But who will take home the big prize? Nobody knows for sure, because let’s face it, sometimes it comes down to the popular vote. However, I’ve definitely got some predictions…
Who Should Win: “The Favourite”
Who Could Win: Honestly, anything besides “Green Book.” When it comes to Best Picture, there really isn’t much of a front-runner this year.
Who Will Win: “The Favourite” or “Roma”. “Roma” does have the added bonus of also being up for Best Foreign Film – could it possibly take home both awards?
Who Should Win: Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Who Could Win: In the battle of musical biopics, Bradley Cooper could potentially take home the statue for “A Star is Born,” and rightfully so.
Who Will Win: Rami Malek.
Who Should Win: Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”. While Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone have received constant praise for their performances in “The Favourite,” as far as I’m concerned, it’s Olivia Colman, the Queen herself, who steals the show.
Who Could Win: Lady Gaga, “A Star is Born” or Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Who Will Win: If you had asked me before the Golden Globes, I would’ve undoubtedly said Lady Gaga, however, I think it’s a toss up between her, Colman, and Close, for sure. You know who I’ll be rooting for!
Who Should Win: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”. While the film definitely has stirred up some controversy, there’s no denying that the two leading actors are absolute dynamite.
Who Could Win: Sam Elliott, “A Star is Born” – definitely a long shot, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Academy selected a veteran actor who up until now, has not received an Oscar nomination.
Who Will Win: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book.
Who Should Win: Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”. If Beale Street could talk, it would talk about how the Academy snubbed this film almost entirely. The least it can do is reward Regina King for her work.
Who Could Win: Emma Stone or Rachel Wiesz, “The Favourite”. There’s no denying that 2018 was the Year for Women and this film exemplifies that sentiment.
Who Will Win: Regina King.
Who Should Win: Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite”. Probably not a “favourite” for the win, but Lanthimos’ film had a vision and style unlike the others, and isn’t that what we want to see?
Who Could Win: Potentially, Spike Lee with “BlacKkKlansman”.
Who Will Win: Alfonso Cuaron, “Roma”. There’s a saying that goes like this…when Alfonso Cuaron makes a movie, he wins an Oscar.
The 91st Academy Awards will take place on Sunday February 24th. Watch to see who wins!
